Turning Dreams into Reality
The concept of Operation Kids was conceived in 1988 when Reid Sheftall, M.D. was a plastic surgery Fellow at the Los Angeles Unit of Shriner’s Hospitals for Burned and Crippled Children. He dreamed of someday opening a free surgery center for children who are unable to afford care. It wasn’t until a short layover in Cambodia in the fall of 1999 that Dr. Sheftall seized on the opportunity to turn his dream into reality. Within six months, Dr. Sheftall had closed his practice in the U.S. and set up shop in Southeast Asia. Operation Kids was born. Since its founding, our organization has performed over 1400 operations free of charge on Cambodian and Vietnamese children of limited means. Along the way we have added free tutoring, pediatric open heart surgery, repair of decubitus ulcers for wheelchair bound children and flap construction for victims of land mines. We are celebrating our 20th year starting in 2019.
